The City of Rio de Janeiro will host the 36th IHF World Hospitalar Congress, in 2009, an event that takes place every two years in different continents. The choice of “The Marvelous City” to host the event was announced on January 26th, 2008, in Geneva, by the Board of the International Hospital Federation (IHF).

Rio de Janeiro participated in the competition to host the event thanks to a joint work of CNS – National Health Confederation and HOSPITALAR. It competed with Lisbon (Portugal) and Dubai (United Arab Emirates).

In order to be present during the official announcement of the winning country, the President of CNS travelled to Geneva, accompanied by Ivan Moreira, President of Rio de Janeiro City Hall Chamber (representing the Mayor Cesar Maia).

About the victory, Dr. Abrahão declared: “It will be the first time the IHF World Hospital Congress will be held in a Latin American country. This is a unique opportunity for Brazil and all the neighbor countries to show what they are doing in the healthcare area”. He highlighted that, during the Congress, the current healthcare services situation will be analyzed and its development for the next decade will be projected.

The President of Hospitalar, Waleska Santos, M.D., also celebrated this victory, highlighting that carrying out the event in Brazil will be an opportunity for the country to show the world its positive experiences in the healthcare area. “The IHF Congress convenes health sector leaders of several countries and shall count on the participation of over 2,000 professionals of many different areas. It will be a very important moment for the exchange of information and knowledge among representatives of countries of the entire world”, declares Waleska Santos, M.D.

Winning path

CNS and Hospitalar presented the candidacy of Brazil to host the World Hospital Congress in September, 2005, during IHF Congress in Nice (France). In May, 2006, during the annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Hospital Federation, held in Ferney-Voltaire, near Geneva, the Brazilian candidacy was defended by José Carlos Abrahão, M.D., President of CNS and member of the IHF Board, and by Waleska Santos, M.D., President of Hospitalar and member of the entity.

Last year, in October, the President of IHF, Gérard Vincent, M.D., was a guest of CNS and Hospitalar in Rio de Janeiro in order to get to know the city and the possible venues for the 2009 World Hospital Congress. The French director was accompanied by the IHF project and events manager, Dwight Moe.
